Default 1996 Auto transmission sudden failure

1996 ranger was running ok but tranny suddenly failed -- shifted from park to reverse, suddenly felt mushy, got it into drive and got it home but it was stuck in drive. shut off engine and now it won't start. Shift lever will move but is not engaging. According to owners manual, tranny is either 4r443 or the 55 -- not sure which. ATF level looks ok but might be over 30k miles old. Low voltage fuses for PCM look ok; i have not checked the high voltage fuses.

Any quick ideas? Which would be better place to take it -- ford dealer or transmission shop?

thanks
