Default overfill after ATF&filter change

2002 Ranger XLT 4X4 3.0V6 Automatic.Dropped pan, some sludge,New filter, etc.According to MY specs,It takes 6 quarts,w/o VConverter? So,I put in FIVE quarts Mercon V .Took for ten mile drive, shifted fine(No Firmness 1st to 2nd,and NO O/D light off flashing! Stopped on flat surface to check level.Went per owners manual.STILL shows overfill! Took for another ten mile drive and shifted without firmness,BUT O/D light off Flashes! Rechecked ATF level after 20 minutes stopped, restart to Temp, and Still Overfill?HELP? Yesterday, before I changed ATF & filter,I went for a 50 mile drive.NO firmness or O/D light Flashing, which has been going on since July! This ATF level has me puzzled.Put in Exactly 5 quarts! I goot one full quart left, and only bought six,So?

Drain some out untill the dipstick shows the correct level. Over filling can be just as bad as under filling.

Cool Re: overfill after ATF&filter change

Thanks Cereal! I read the wrong info,OR,in my old age(The "Golden"?) years, that it was 6 quarts.Upon further research,I read it was THREE! DUH! Luckily,I only put in Five and I have a B&D Rabbit Siphon w/ long clear plastic tubing! I siphoned out the Two,wentt for a 25 mile drive, and rechecked it.At first No shift errors! Then after rechecking level added pint, and another 10 mile drive. There WAS a Firmnes(slight) between 1st&2nd AND the O/D light was flashing. That was my last attempt at an "Easy" fix.Gotta take it in for code scan! Will drive a little on backcountry roads today.Just pray "She" holds up! No freeway,or severe servide! Thanks Yall! Will let you know how my "Expedition" goes!

does that truck have the 4 speed or 5 speed trans. if its the 4 speed they only hold 9 quarts from bone dry including convertor. and most times when you drop the pan and change the filter it only takes 3-4 quarts. becuse you dont drop the valve body an there is still fluid around the drums. so yes the trans hold 6 qts. but the pan holds 3-4. so drain some of the fluid out and have the codes cleared. it the o/d light comes back on then take it to the transmission shop and have them take a look?

Thumbs up Re: overfill after ATF&filter change

Removed excess Fluid MerconV ,Yes I have auto 5 speed! ALL problems eliminated! Goes To show you.If I'd changed my ATF at lest at 30K Recommened by Ford, msaybe I'd never had this minor Firmness between 1st&2nd or it seemed skipped 2nd and 3rd?Couldn't quite tell? Now after a simple ATF,filter, pan gasket less than $15!,My Tranny works Perfect.I can again here that smooth shift between 1st AND 2nd and ALL other shifts! Noo $100 code scan! No overhaul! Just keep that ATF clean! At lest in my case! Took a "Hard" 100 mile trip.Absolutely NO problems! I believe "We Got 'Er "Boys"!Goes Ta Show Ya,gotta keep dat ATF clean! Clean! Clean! And thats w/o the flushing machines I had done twice before 60000 miles,NOW 105000 miles! BUT it fixed EVERYTHING!

Thanks for your input Fluffy! I'm "HEP" ,about the reality of still Tranny and for that matter ANY maechanical failure! I have a few things that allay my Severe Anxiety! One,I'm retired on disability! Two ,I just changed my Auto Insurance ,so they have "FREE" towing! I also drive less than 100 miles a week! Living in the SoCal "Outback",I can Drive to nearest town:30 miles, and get most things, every few weeks. No high speed freeway.State Highway, two lane.Average 50MPH. I know it can go anytime, and keep an eye on my Instruments!Had more "breakdowns when it was new! It was in Dealer five or six times in last few years.I'll NEVER be Anxiety Free ,evn with a NEW one! Just less anxiety when I'm driving New! Thanks Ya'll ,I'll be back soon I'm sure!
