Default Transmission level fluid

I just bouight a 5 speed 89 ranger and was wondering how do you check or change the tranny fluid? i want to check all the levels and the clutch resoivor was completly dry so i wanted to see what was in the trannsmission

You check it at the fill hole. It should be level to that hole. Just put your finger in there to check. If it gets fluid on it or it drips when you pull the plug, you are good.

Okay thanks i wanted to change the tranny fluid is there a certain brand people reccommed?

Sometimes, if the tranny fluid hasn't been changed regularly, its not a good idea to change it. As far as the clutch fluid, is there not a clutch fluid to buy off the shelf at AutoZone or something? Maybe check to manual to see if there's a certain weight to use...I have an Automatic and my four wheeler is a clutchless manual so I don't mess with that stuff.

the manual says sae80 but i can only find sae80-90 and dunno what brand or if they are compatable with an old vehicle like this. also i just wanted to refill the tranny level to normal since it leaks a bit.
