How much do you know about transmissions? Not trying to be a smart ass, it's just that it's really hard for me to describe what to do if you don't know what you are looking at when you pull the top cover off. Thus the question.
BTW, I don't think you dropped anything in the trany, more than likely it was one of the shift forks either rocking on the shaft after being disengaged from the sliders, or the fork hitting the side of the case. I don't remember anything hiding in there waiting to pop out at the first chance it gets.
One thing you might try for giggles. After removing the top cover put the shifter back into its bore and try moving the stick around while watching the shift forks move. They should move freely. Then see if you can put the shifter in to 1st gear position, and carefully place the top cover back on and see if you can pick up all the sliders that way. A long shot, but you might get lucky.
