Default Pulled Inner Shifter Out....Issue

ok, so I was replacing those 3 rubber plugs on the top of my transmission because they were leaking (I heard it's common)...but in the process I accidentally pulled the inner shifter out of the top of the transmission...while it was in gear. I heard some sort of 'tink' sound when it came out...followed by some swear words...

Well, hoping it was ok I just simply put it back in there. Put everything back together, started it up and it's basically in gear while the shifter is in neutral. Any Ideas? It was in 1st gear while it was parked. I don't know if anything dropped in there or what... argh.

Well it's deffinately gotta come apart again. It could be a lot of things, but I think the first thing to do is to pull the top off again, get the transmission in neutral and look at the bottom of the shifter assembly.

I seem to remember when I took my M5R1 apart that I did basically the same thing (with the transmission on a bench fortunately), left it in gear. I found I couldn't get it back together properly that way so I had to play with it until I got the trans in neutral, then it all went together smoothly.

Hope this helps

How much do you know about transmissions? Not trying to be a smart ass, it's just that it's really hard for me to describe what to do if you don't know what you are looking at when you pull the top cover off. Thus the question.

BTW, I don't think you dropped anything in the trany, more than likely it was one of the shift forks either rocking on the shaft after being disengaged from the sliders, or the fork hitting the side of the case. I don't remember anything hiding in there waiting to pop out at the first chance it gets.

One thing you might try for giggles. After removing the top cover put the shifter back into its bore and try moving the stick around while watching the shift forks move. They should move freely. Then see if you can put the shifter in to 1st gear position, and carefully place the top cover back on and see if you can pick up all the sliders that way. A long shot, but you might get lucky.
