Default Complety lost... 96 4x4 Problems....

Hey Guys Alex here, I am new to this Site, anyways, I have a 96 XLT 4.0 auto 4x4 with 3.73LS. My Problem is I am pretty sure the Automatic hubs are bad, or going back, The left side is the one i think is bad. When i switch it to 4x4Hi it doesn't lock in right away, I can hear it spin with in its self, then it clunk's and locks in, i can drive a couple feet turn and it sounds like it binds up. I also notice it wont go in to 4x4lo anymore, I priced out the Warn manual kit.. but i have never done a repair to this kind of 4x4 system. if there's something easy to fix then id like to do that vs the 280 for the kit. I can turn a wrench pretty well when it comes to cars, but somethings i have never messed with, so i would love any tips and advice.

Thumbs up Re: Complety lost... 96 4x4 Problems....

Welcome to the forums, and I reckon I'll bump this, as I have a similar
situation with a similar rig. It is a `97 with a 5 speed manual tranny,
but I know exactly Jack and squat about 4x4 intricacies.

I keep hearing a clicking kind of noise when I flip the switch into 4 high,
almost like it keeps trying to shove a solenoid based rod into position,
but cannot do so.

I'd tear into the driver's side area, but wouldn't have a clue as to what
I am looking for/at.

Any hints and or tips would be most appreciated...

Run a search. I believe it has been mentioned that it would be cheaper and simpler to just swap out the electronic locking hubs with a manual set. I could be wrong though. It won't be the first time and it won't be the last...

If you go to the warns look for ones for the jeep. warn makes a set of hubs for the rear of a wrangler that are stronger then the standard broncoII ranger hubs.
