I need some help getting the drum off. The Chiltons manel says to pull it from the axle it seems like it's locked in place. I tried tapping on the back of the edge of the drum, still nothing. Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated.

The backing plate will have a little narrow access plug at the bottom of the back. That gives you access to the adjuster mechanism. Grab a flashlight and aim it into the hole, locate the star wheel and rotate it upward with a medium flat tip screwdriver. This'll let the drums retract so that you can slide the drum off. The manual says to also insert another screwdriver to push away the retention lever but nah. Just hook into the star wheel from a good leveraged position. 'Bout maybe 3 + whole turns will get you past the rusty ridge on the inside of the drum's inner edge and let you slide it off.
Rust does not exist in the world of Haynes so maybe that's why they don't mention that?

I think that you can tell 9" from 10" brakes by looking at the "max diameter" number stamped on the outside face of the drum. Mine are 10" and say "max diameter 265.3." So I suppose a 9" brake could be identified by a number say around ~240.?.

Got it? Dan?

Best suggestion is if you're gonna be removing the drum, don't hit the brakes or the parking brake when you park it. Let it roll up against a chock or something.....I use my clutch as my brake when I prepare to remove the drum. That way, the pad'll be just grazing the drum friction surface and the drum should just slide off, if not a little love tap with the hammer will do the job.

You can tell 9" from 10" just by looking at the drum. The 10" drum is pretty flat and squared edges on the outside. The 9" have almost a bevel on the outside edges and look pretty dinky. The blue-truck-guy-that-won't-leave-because-we're-all-*******s-but-always-comes-back should have the 9" being that he's a reg cab short 2wd and probably 4 banger.
