Post 70 mph tops??? What's going on here???

Been pondering this for the past 2+ years. And it's been gettin worse every month. I do not know if this would be a Driveline, Fuel, Electrical or Engine problem. This '01 Ford just won't go. There is no torque, acceleration, overall speed ANYTHING. She tops out at 70-80 on level roads, any incline...even a slight one will cause her to slow down dramatically. I'm practically to the floor on the interstate and constantly being forced to drop down a gear to keep up with traffic. But the Engine seems to be running just fine. I've replaced the fuel filter and a couple damaged vacuum hoses. I'm about to change the tranny filter and oil again in hopes that it will relieve the problem a bit. Any help would be GREATLY appriciated.

First things first, oil has nothing to do with it so don't waste your money changing oil that doesn't need to be changed.

It needs fuel and air in the proper proportion to work right. If you inhibit either fuel or air, your performance will suffer. Since you already changed the fuel filter, move on to air. When was the last time you replaced the intake air filter?

Not long ago. but like I said the engine seems to be running fine. I was thinking that the transmission oil filter might be gummed up. to me seems like something is wrong with the tranny itself.

How about a transmission flush, has that been done ever? What does the ATF look like on the dipstick?

i'd first start with a new trans filter and a flush if you haven't done so already. You could be experiencing the clutch(s) slipping.

As long as I've had it, it hasnt been done. And as for the oil...the level is spot on, and colorwise, not bad...light brownish...but not black, no flakes or debris in it.

Not motor oil. Motor oil is irrelevant. The transmission dipstick. What does the fluid and level look like. (The level is only accurate when it is warmed up and engine running.)

I'm thinking you have other issues. The transmission might be slipping, but you would notice the engine revving abnormally high if that were the case.

How many miles on it? Could be something as simple as incorrectly gapped spark plugs, or something as bad as sunk valves.

The transmission fluid is brown?? Geez, yeah that could very well be your problem, combined possibly with the trans filter if the fluid is that bad. It still sounds more like an air flow problem, but the transmission definately needs a flush and filter change. Hard to diagnose further when something like that is in bad shape.

Check out the catalytic converter as well. Often an engine that will not run properly is being choked by excessive back pressure, the converter is clogged or otherwise damaged. Alternatively, it could also be something like a crushed exhaust pipe. If it is the transmission, you should be noticing a lot of slippage.....

Ah, thank you for that info...now I feel like an idiot . Not one time has anyone agreed that THAT could be the problem. Always something more complicated. Thats why I dismissed it as a solution. I need to find a new Technician.

I'll give it a shot and take her to a transmission shop and see what they say.

Ah, the other half of air flow. It's easy to overlook that even if you can inhale enough air, you still need to exhale it. If the exhaust is plugged up, it will be just as detrimental as a clogged up intake filter.
