Default Torque converter slipping

'93 Ranger 3.0/Auto/4x4 220,000 miles. Seems like the torque converter is not locking up anymore. Take off is fine, both normal and foot-to-floor. But, when I let up on the gas at any speed or any gear 1-2-3-OD, the RPM's drop to around 700-800. There is no engine breaking. I can manually down shift and there is no engine braking in any gear.... like the tranny is disconnected from the engine when you are off the gas. Yet, floor it, and it moves ahead fine at any speed. Several months ago, it would cruise at 70 mph at about 2,500 RPM. Now, it is about 3,100 RPM at 70 mph. Fluid is dark red, is clean, and smells fine; no burnt smell. I bought the truck last spring with 216K, and have not changed tranny fluid. Bad torque converter or something else.... any ideas?

I don't know what to tell you but at full throttle a slipping T converter should be obvious.
The 4 spd transmission you have in your truck normally lasts about 150,000 miles and you are lucky.
If the truck gets you to where you are going, be thankful for that since it has very high miles on it.

my truck had 350K on it and it started havin issues.. more than likely steel slivers in the valve body! Put the rear of the truck up on blocks, then start truck and run it in reverse and step on it.. might backwash the slivers out of your valve body! you could try a trans service, fluid and filter.. might help after you do the reverse trick

Thanks for your input, guys. Gee, a life of 150K on the tranny? I guess I'm on borrowed time! I'll try the suggestions and see where we go from here.

I had an rusty rolled-over '03 4x4 4.0 lifted Ranger with 185K on it and the engine died with internal/cam/valve issues so it went bye bye. Since my '93 is pretty solid, I'll work out the mechanical issues and keep this on on the road. Again, thanks for the tips.

Any other ideas or comments are also welcome.
