Re-gearing
I stopped in at my local 4WheelParts store since I have never been in one before. I inquired about getting my Ranger re-geared. It took the guy a while to look everything up and he even had to go check out the front end to see what it is (Dana 35).
After some searching and clicking and 15 mins later he prints me out a quote for 2,700 and some odd dollars. Now, I'm no rocket surgeon but that seems a tad high!
What should I expect to pay for both axles to be regeared?
I'm looking into buying the parts myself and hitting up a transmission/differential shop to install them for me. I figure I'll save at least a grand that way. I've found Yukon ring and pinion sets for both front and rear, along with the install kits for $770 shipped. The only thing missing is gear oil.
How should I go about this?

Re: Re-gearing
If he was figuring $2700 for parts and labor, not a bad quote.

Re: Re-gearing
Gears 300-500 per axle, overhaul kit 100-200 per axle, if that includes rebuilding the limited slip add another 150, and about 4-5 hours labor per axle at 100+ per hour. 20% markup on parts for the mechanic, 50-100 in fluid and misc.
Yea 2,700 is about right.

Re: Re-gearing
Wow, thanks guys. I just felt it was high. Guess not.
I'm looking into buying everything myself and having it installed. They were wanting almost $400 each for front and rear install kits. I can find them both much cheaper. Plus, the markup you mentioned wont be as bad.
Guess I'll plan to spend much more than anticipated.

Re: Re-gearing
just my $0.02, it might be worth it to pay the extra $$$ if they are a really good shop and they stand by their work. A lot of the time when you bring parts to a local shop, they won't warranty anything.

Re: Re-gearing
a: do you really need to regear? What's your current gear ratio and tire size? Also, truck info outside of 04 LII??? You're 4.10 stock and 4.0L. In general if 4.10 stock and 01+ 4.0, I say it's not worth it to gear for 33's....but 35's, absolutely!
b: I'm about $800 into my re-gear. $150 a loose axle via word of mouth retired axle and d-line guy and about $200 an axle for parts via online discounter for Yukons. 10 years later, she's still running beautifully.
c: retail and full blown labor rates, they're not that far off. Keep in mind many shops will not install customer supplied parts. Also, if you can avoid 4wp, I would. They typically sublet gear work out to an outside guy thus adding cost to you. Figure out who that outside guy is and you'll be better off dollar for dollar.

I'm with you, I don't mind paying for quality and peace of mind.

Yes I have 4.10s and I'm still sitting on 31x10.50s currently. But I have brand new 33x12.50s sitting in the garage. I got those online at 4WP and the tires were faced inward, which is why I was in their store, getting them to flip the tires around. I haven't put them on yet because I have to install the new T-bars.
I've had 33s on a 4.10 Ranger in the past and it was really sluggish compared to stock. I want it to actually be decent in some terrain, which is why I want to re-gear. I want the power to get into some rough stuff and not worry about my larger tires slowing me down.
Yeah I know 4WP marks everything up as most places do. I get it, everyone needs to make money. I guess I just didn't plan on it being so much. We have to have hobbies though right!? $$

Become a prostitute. A few weeks getting that sweet filthy ass pounded into pudding will pay for new gears.

As thrilling as that sounds, I think I'll do it the old fashioned way and just work for the money.
Threw on my new torsion bars today and the new tires. Still seems as if one side is much tighter than the other, I'm not sure what the deal is with that. I may have not needed new t bars at all.
Tuners were unable to tune my Ranger because SCT doesn't have my strategy code loaded. Weird, like I have a one of a kind ECU code. Either way, the tuners have to send the code to SCT and then build a tune for it.
From there, I'll see how the truck is and if I'll need to regear. Maybe I can get enough juice out of the tunes to make it seem like stock. We'll see.

Re: Re-gearing
I'm ugly, no one would pay for lovin.
On the subject of gearing though, truck rolls fine but is definitely more sluggish than before.
I love Rangers, this one is my 5th. But I wish they had a little more power from the factory. I wonder if there's been any 2.3 ecoboost swaps yet? If only money was easier to come by. Which I guess takes us back to the prostitution thing...

Re: Re-gearing
The 2.3 ecoboost and duratec are the same base engine so it's easier just to turbo charge an existing duratec ranger.

Re: Re-gearing
I would imagine a lot has changed though. Cams, crank, timing, fuel. I'm sure the base 2.3 would still be more efficient than the old 2.3.
I know there's a company out there that makes supercharger kits for the 4.0. You have to supply your own supercharger though, they make all the mounting hardware and everything. If I'm not mistaken, it doesn't even require a tune with only 5lbs of boost.

Their kits are on sale right now, but you still need to find a supercharger for it. Apparently you can get one online for $300-$500. Their site claims that you get nearly 100hp out of it with extra items. With their standard kit, you can get about 50hp, which is still pretty decent for a truck with only about 165hp to the wheels anyway. I think they have some videos on YouTube.
With that said, I can supercharge my truck and make up for the loss of power from the larger tires for cheaper than I can regear!
