Default Does Slip Yoke Need to be replaced?

Hi Everyone!

Because I was leaking trans fluid from the output shaft seal I dropped the drive shaft today and replaced seal. After watching a couple different youtube vids it looked fairly straight forward.

I did find removing the seal was a little more difficult on my truck than it looked in the videos. They just used a flathead screwdriver and it popped right off. I tried to be real careful and eventually got it off but also scuffed up the surface about halfway in from the outside on the aluminum edge that the metal ring on the seal seats against. Picture attached.. its on the bottom left of the outside ring. You guys think this marring of the flat surface will cause a leak or is the rubber part and inside of the housing what holds the fluid in?

Additionally the slip yoke looks like it has some pitting/light scratches/etching im guessing from mud/water on the surface that is supposed to be smooth that slides into the rubber seal. I have attached a picture of this as well. Do I need to replace this to prevent it from prematurely wearing out the new seal? Or maybe sand with 1000 grit sand paper to smooth it out again?

Last question.. on the inside of the end of the slip yoke all of the teeth look the same except for a squared groove going down just one side. It looks too clean to be a broken tooth (not sure if that is the right term) so I am thinking that is just to make sure it lines up correctly when fitting it back into the end of the transmission but I am not sure. Anyone know if that is normal or not? Picture of this included as well.

Thanks in advance for any help.

The only problem I see might be on the yoke where the seal rides, if its worn much it might leak, other than that it doesn't look like you've got a problem.

Thanks for the reply! It didn't feel too rough but I didn't know if it had to be perfectly smooth or not. I don't know how it got scuffed up. Maybe dirt and water got inside the seal and it wore at it over time.

I added a close up of the area that rides in and out of the seal. You think that is too much wear? I don't want to have to do the seal again in a week or two...

Did you have the thin seal that set flush with the back of the tail shaft housing, or the one that had the extension boot? You should see a wear ring where the yoke runs in the seal, if its deep, rough or pitted there, you might want to replace it.

I have the one with the extension boot. I do see where it has been wearing and it is slightly rough compared to the rest of the shaft that is always covered. I guess maybe I should bite the bullet and replace. The only other option would be to put it back how it is and see if it leaks again . Not sure I want to do the seal again anytime soon.

Thanks for the reply!
