Default 1996 B4000 5-speed questions

I've had my 96 for a couple of years now and the last couple of months the shifting has degraded to where today I had to shut it down to get into first (on my way to get an inspection haha!) So while driving the shifting into all gears is a problem. I don't want to do this or do that in order to shift, that's what the clutch and clutch pedal do. I've read some here on how air in the hydraulics is a probable cause, tomorrow I'm going to pop the cover and see if I can measure the clutch movement. First question how would air likely get into system if it hasn't been opened? Second maybe unrelated question, what oil/oils are most suggested here for the 5 speed? (4 x 4 by the way) My son mostly drives the truck, I didn't realize how bad it has gotten until today. I've got to get to the bottom of this and get it fixed.

Have you checked the fluid level in the master cyl reservore? If its empty, that's one way air can get in, also the master cyl can wear causing air to be sucked in. Could be the clutch is worn out, not enough travel to release it, the pilot bearing could ne causing it also. As for oil we use what the manual for the year calls for.

The fluid level in the reservoir is up to the step, none has been added since I bought the truck. Since it has degraded so quickly I wouldn't think it is a worn clutch but it has 160K miles so that's very possible. If it stops raining I will check the clutch travel today.

Online manual I found notes Dexron II, M-III or Mercon. Chilton manual I have specifies Mercon ATF, 5.6 pints. Also noted for Traction-Lok axles is to add 4 oz. of Additive Friction Modifier meeting Mazda specs. I read if the tag on the rear has a L in the code for limitied slip then it's Traction-Lok. Want to have the oils here before taking things apart, doing the tranny and the axles and the transfer case.
