Default Difference between 4x4 and 4x2 tranny?

Im in need of an automatic transmission for my 2001 Ranger 4x4 with the 4.0L engine. I have a couple of questions;

1; what year models will fit the 2001 Ranger

2; whats the difference between the 4x4 5r55e and the 2 wheel drive version and why wont a 5r55e from a 2 wheel drive work for a 4x4 (besides the fact that ones hooked to a transfer case)

They have two different output shafts. The 4x4 trans has a longer shaft. It is possible to swap shafts but it unfortunately means completely disassembling the trans so its simply not practical.

As for what years will work Im not 100% positive but I believe the only difference from 2001 and up is where the speed sensors are located. Internally all the 5r55e's stayed the same over the years.

Damn, 2 different output shafts eh. That seems like a big waste. You would think Ford would have designed 1 standard tranny seeing how many vehicles use it.
Oh well. TRhanks for the info Dirtman it is much appreciated.
