Default low range low gear no engine braking

Just bought 2008 4X4 sport 4.0 6Cyl Auto. 2007,00KM Every thing seemed to work as I tried High and Low range. Shifts fine in both high and low. O.D. switch works OK. Knew it had some mileage on it but runs great. When first trip off road ( logging roads ) mild grade downhill. Stopped and put in neutral and low range OD off and down shifted drive 2. some mild engine braking occurred. When speed increased rpms went to 1100 and stayed there while speed kept increasing no engine braking at this point. At 30km Stopped and put into first and gave a little gas to make sure in gear speed increased with no engine braking at all rpms went to 1100 and stayed and speed increased according to steepness of grade. Just like it was in neutral. Does this whether in high or low range only in first gear ( drive one ). Is there a coast mode ? I can repeat this any time on a downhill grade. Can this be torque converter related. as long as transmission is under load every thing seems to be OK. Sorry about being long winded. Had transmission fluid changed when I bought it. Thanks

Yes, the transmission has a coast mode. Off throttle the RPMs will stay around 1,000-1,200 (which is better fuel efficiency and emissions wise than dropping to idle) and it will be "in gear" but disconnected to... Well... Coast. Downshifting manually should give slight engine braking for a moment but then disengage if your not on the throttle.

Otherwise it would have horrible gas mileage for daily driving.

Thanks for the reply. That is what seems to be happening. I am not concerned with highway driving as all is well there. When I am 4x4ing I depend on engine braking when I use low range to come down a grade that I used low range to go up ( ie: rough logging roads ) this is the first auto 4x4 that I not been able to use engine braking when off road and 4 wheel drive to assist me downhill when I just need to hold back a little. If there is no way to use engine braking going down hill to assist my needing to ride brakes every mild downgrade ( off road ) I may very well may have to part with this truck? Foot brake and engine braking have always been a team for me off road. Will keep researching this. My Auto 4cyl. 94yj has no problem engine braking.

If you wanna spend 500 bucks most good tuners have the ability to program the transmission to keep the torque converter clutch locked while coasting in order to engine brake.
