Angry Must downshift my automatic trans manually

So. My trusty 05 Ranger will Not downshift on its on. If I come to a stop in Drive, it acts quite exactly the same as forgetting to downshift and push the clutch in a manual transmission. Shudders. Stalls. This only applies if the trip involves exceeding around 60 kph. Our best transmission shop found no issues and sent me to Ford for a computer flash. Ford did that, and did a software update. They also replaced a blown fuse in the PCM. Great news, however this did exactly nothing to remedy the issue
The only way to drive is to go into Reverse first, apply a little torque or actually back up a few feet, then select any forward gear. And of course manually pull her down into 2nd and 1st when I need to stop.
Quite a mystery.

Sounds like the torque converter clutch is sticking on. Usually this would present with a DTC though - p0742. Once the torque converter clutch engages its a direct link to the transmission and if it sticks on its like trying to come to a stop without pressing the clutch in on a manual as you described. I would test the TCC selonoid first.

Ok thanks Dirtman, I will return back to the trans shop I guess. Or maybe the Ford dealer since they charged me $ fir fixing the issue insufficiently.
Although they did do a software update and my check engine light is no longer illuminated so that’s nice. I wonder if the engine was running in safe mode all this time

What exactly did the trans shop do before they just sent you to the ford dealer? Doesn't quite sound like a great trans shop if they didn't actually do any diagnostic work before just giving up and blaming a programming error. They should have at least dropped the pan to test solenoids. Also sounds like the dealer never test drove the truck and just did whatever was on the work order and shipped it before bothering to determine if it even resolved the issue. Either way find new shops.
