Default Transmission problem

Well today was a beautiful day, my o/d light started flashing on my 02 ranger auto.
I got the codes read and it says all gears have the incorrect ratio??

Was wondering if anyone has ever had this problem and would be able to give me some information on there experiences?

Does this mean get a new tranny or is there any other ways of rectifying this??

What were the actual DTC's? Was there only one? Need the actual code(s) to be able to help. Gear ratio codes are from P0729 - P0736 and they all mean something different. ALWAYS WRITE DOWN THE CODES AND NOT THE "DEFINITION"!

Incorrect ratio codes can be caused by alot of different issues. Some simple some catastrophic.

What is the condition of the fluid and when was it last serviced? How many miles on the truck? Does the transmission still seem to be shifting fine? Is reverse engagement taking longer than normal? Have you noticed it running at slightly higher than normal RPM's especially on the highway? Any other physical symptoms?

There is also a TSB on the 5r44/55e transmission of that era for bad valve body gaskets that can blow out and cause all sorts of problems. May or may not be related to that.

First things first let us know the codes and check the fluid.

I got 1 code per gear so 5 in total they said that each of the gears where out of ratio
I can not remember exactly what they where.

Fluid change and filter change done recently so they are fine

Got the fluid and filter change as my truck was shifting bad and randomly slipped 3 times so thought the fluid and filter change might help but unfortunately it didn’t.

Revers takes the usual amount of time.

After driving it for 5 minutes the od light stars to flash and it keeps me in one gear I’d assume 3rd and won’t up shift/ down shift but each time before the od light flashes it drives fine.

Having prior problems with poor shifting and slipping and p0731, p0732, p0733, p0734, and p0735 DTCs Im unfortunately thinking the bands and clutches are simply worn and an overhaul may be necessary, or a major pressure issue due to a bad pump or leak in the valve body BUT pressure issues generally present first with a slow reverse engagement.

My other thought would be a computer issue but again with the slipping and poor shifting it sounds more like a mechanical problem.

Yeah I thought it was the torque converter at first but I’m just thinking of doing a complete rebuild of my Tranny

Just need to find the price of rebuild kits

Any advice of quality part?

Are you intending to do this yourself? I'd really recommend against that unless you've had experience rebuilding automatic transmissions as well as having all the proper tools required. There are several specialty tools needed to do the job right. Even with experience you also should always have a service manual for the specific transmission your working on.

Secondly, I would also recommend fully diagnosing the issue before doing anything. Im very familiar with the 5r44/55e trans but even the god of transmissions himself can only make educated guesses when diagnosing over the internet. The internet is no replacement for driving the vehical and doing physical hands on testing with some good diagnostic tools. A good transmission shop shouldn't charge you much if anything to do this. Then you will at least have confirmation of what you need to do.

Then you have 4 choices. #1 - do the entire job yourself (refer to my warnings in my first paragraph). #2 - Have a transmission shop do the entire job (expensive but you know its done right). #3 - pull the transmission yourself and bring it to the transmission shop to rebuild as whats called a bench job (you will save a ton of money this way). #4 - Buy a remanufactured unit and install it yourself (about as expensive as option #2 but usually you will get a decent warranty of up to 5 years whereas a shop may offer you 30 days. You could also buy a junkyard unit which can be bought for sometimes as little as 100 bucks but I've never had good experiences with this so that option is on you lol.

As for rebuild kits if your dead set on doing it yourself go to transmission parts usa. You will need a master overhaul kit AND a valve body kit w/ solenoids. There is zero point rebuilding the trans to slap the old valve body back in it. I see way to many people do this and it boggles my mind. The valve body is the control unit for the entire trans.

I’m planning on having a shop rebuild it and was going to provide the parts needed to cut the shops cost a little as they tend to over charge for parts I was planning on getting valve body and solenoids also a new torque converter.

Thank you for your input

I’m not familiar with your area but most shops won’t warranty any job that has customer purchased parts. Good luck.
