Default Clunk and grind and now won't move

Hi guys,

2004 4.0l XLT 4x4, 5 speed - 153k miles.

Took the truck to the dump today, about 5 miles away - the truck was running fine as always. As I pulled away from the dump, letting the clutch out in 1st gear, I heard a loud clunk, similar to the stereotypical 4x4 clunk, but a little more pronounced. As I continued down the road the clunk returned, bumping the whole truck several times. I pushed in the clutch and coasted onto a side street. When I let out the clutch again, however, I was greeted with a loud grinding noise and no movement; kinda like you missed a gear. I put the truck in several different gears and was presented with the same grinding noise and no movement from the truck.

I had the truck towed home and I put it on jack stands. When I engage the clutch in any gear I can see the driveshaft turn slightly, stop, and then the grinding happens. No wheels spin when the clutch is engaged - in 2 wheel drive or 4x4.

I don't know the age of the clutch, but it has never slipped and I've never had trouble finding a gear. I'm puzzled and looking for advice because I'm thinking it's either an expensive repair, or I'm over looking something.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It sounds more like a transfer case problem.

Any particular way to diagnose that it's the transfer case? Or is removal and looking for broken bits the only way?

I would rotate the drive shaft and check for slop in the transfer case chain. You can also check the oil in the case to see if it has any metal in it or if the case is dry.
