Default Valvoline Transfer Case Fluid

Anyone try the Valvoline Transfer case fluid? It claims to be fully synthetic and meet Ford xl-12 as well as be suitable for transfer cases spec'd for Dex/Merc ATF. I just filled my tcase with it and I only ask because it seems pretty thin. Red in color and smells like ATF. My Sport Trac has the same BW1354 calling for Mercon as the Ranger.

"Valvoline™ Multi-Vehicle Transfer Case Fluid is a full synthetic offering that meets the performance needs for transfer cases calling for Ford XL-12, GM Auto Trak II, as well as transfer cases requiring ATF fluids (DEX/MERC, ATF +4, etc).

Yes I used it in my transfer case it's been in for about a year now and everything's fine.

Great!!

It's probaby overkill because our cases don't have any clutches requiring specialty fluid.

In my reading there are many that think Ford Xl-12 is just Mercon with some friction modifier for newer all-wheel-drive (clutched) cases. If I were a betting man, I would say this Valvoline stuff is just synthetic Dex/Merc with similar friction modifiers.

The bottles of mercon v from Ford specifically state not to be used in tcases. Although I strongly believe this is due to the aforementioned clutched tcases, I was still warry of mercon v.
