Default Engine runs-transmission unresponsive

My 1987 4x4 (automatic) was running down highway at about 45 mph. I gave it a little extra gas and then I had no connection to transmission. There was no warning and no noise. Once stopped, I found no connection in any gear. Is there a cable that could have snapped in the system somewhere? It's hard to believe the transmission failed but that is all I can figure out at this time.
