Default M5OD-R1 or M5OD-R1-HD

How do you tell the difference between the R1 and the HD?

Are there numbers stamped on the bell housing or somewhere in the VIN?

I would love to have the lower 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gears from the HD in my R1.

Duh! Stupid me. It's on the dang door sticker. SMH

You most likely have the R1..thats what I have in mine, and I think that's the only one that the 2.3l came with

Yep, the HD is the SOHC transmission.

So I'm assuming I can't bolt an HD trans to my 2.3 then. Wish I could have those lower gears.

As far as I know, the internal parts can be interchanged.

I thought I read an article on that awhile back, but thought it was in the transmission that went behind the 2.3 Lima. And something about having to modify the stick. I wonder if I could just put the needed internals into my transmission and not have to modify anything.

Anyone have any insight into this?

All of the Ranger engines shared the same Mazda transmission from '89 on IIRC. There were slight variations in gearing, and several versions of the transmission manufactured to match the appropriate engine's bellhousing bolt pattern. If you're willing to disassemble two of them, you should be able to move the gear sets back and forth as needed.

I'm not 100% on the swap between a standard R1 and an HD, but it would surprise me if there are relevant differences. There have definitely been forum discussions in the past about swapping between R1 variants.
