Default Creating a PTO option...

I was trying to figure out what would be better or the combination of possibly both gearing and pulley size.

I am considering using a 7.5 axle due to its slightly smaller size and lighter weight as an axle setup for my Offroad Trailer build. I think with some effort and cleverness I could turn the driveshaft side into a working PTO to turn a small generator or alternator so that while the trailer was in motion, it would in-turn turn a pulley and belt setup with a specially mounted alternator to create power to charge a battery bank. This would offer me a chance to have onboard power creation as well solar power, and shore power options as backups or resources.

So my question is would gearing lend a hand to how fast the driveshaft knuckle turns or would that be most relative to the size of the pulley used; or would a combination thereof offer an even better unique combo?

Anyone's thoughts?

The crank pully on your truck is around what, 7 or 8 inches in dia. and the alt pulley is like 2-1/2 2-3/4? So would need to figure what the drive shaft would be turning at given speed, then work the pulley sizes.

Right.. the other half of that question is, how relative to speed is the gearing of said rear end options 3.08, 3.53.. ect.

I'm sure that between gear speed and pulley size I can come up with the proper pulley to make this work correctly. Well, that's the trick I'm after anyway. Other tricks of weight or other options in mind will be the outside variables then after. Really the only reason for the axle itself is simplicity; I have the spare parts, OEM functional Drum brakes on a offroad trailer frame build, and the remote possibilities of this PTO idea of mine.

With the pinion turning the ring gear in normal operation, the ring would be turned slower at what ever speed. But reverse that, and having the ring turning the pinion, it would be turning lots faster at speed. So guessing a drive pulley smaller than the engine one would work better, and tire size would play a part too.

Shit, your right.. I totally left the tire size out of the equation. 33"min-35"max
