Default 2003 Ford Ranger 2WD Front Hub Nut/Spindle Nut Torque

2003 Ford Ranger 2WD

I had to change my front brake rotors on the Ranger and the wheel bearings are incorporated into the rotors. The Haynes manual has no torque specs for the front hub nut/spindle nut so I did an Internet search and found this procedure and torque spec posted by a Ford Technician.

Just thought I would post this here for anyone else needing the torque specs for the front spindle nut.

Pay attention to the second torque in the sequence. It's 17 INCH pounds. Not 17 foot pounds.

Once you have the front bearings properly packed with grease and the grease seal (and inner bearing) installed then slide the rotor/hub assembly over the spindle.

Then install the outer bearing and slide it into the rotor/hub until it stops.

Then install the washer.

Then install the nut and tighten it by hand.

While spinning the rotor/hub assembly tighten the bearing retaining nut to 24 foot pounds of torque (34Nm).

Now loosen the nut about half a turn and then again while spinning the rotor/hub assembly retighten the nut to 17 Inch Pounds (2Nm). Make sure there is no play in the hub. Now install the retaining (cotter) pin and bend it to hold it in place. If the hole doesn't line up then tighten the nut a little bit until it does line up.

Double check that hub for play after a couple hundred miles of driving and retorque it if necessary.
