Default Transmission or torque converter?

I just recently bought a 2001 Ranger with a 3.0 v6 and a 5r44e transmission. I bought it with what the owner told me was a transmission problem. The problem was when I turned overdrive on it would shudder and I thought it was clutch discs or a band slipping. I bought a rebuild kit and tore my transmission apart and it looks almost perfect inside. The clutches and bands are almost identical to the new ones. My question is did I really need to rebuild my transmission? I don't want to install the thing and then have it not work because of the torque converter. I noticed a little shuddering in other gears every once in a while, but it was mostly when I turned overdrive on. Thanks for any help!

I have a 2000 ford ranger with 4.ol engine , 4wd, 4 speed auto trans with od. having shift problems so I changed fluid mercon v and filter kit. flushed system thru cooler tubing into a bucket flushed out about 9 qts while shifting several times thru the gears. I added 8 qts then went for a 1 mile drive. seemed to be working fine. however afterchecking fluid level saw nothing on dip stick. shut down engine let cool pulled stick cool saw level at low side. Wher did the fluid go ? what should I do next?

Dr. Tranny Instant Shudder Fixx
I generally do not like additives but this did fix my shudder.

Always change torque converter when doing a rebuild
