Re: Open diff what to do?
Any ‘93 and up ranger axle will physically fit. Not sure if there are any differences in how the brake lines and parking brake cables are set up. Fx4 lvl 2 axles are a 31 spline 8.8 and have a larger tube. They will still bolt up, but you’ll need larger ubolts (should always get new ubolts anyway) and top plates.
You could look for an axle that came with a factory L/S and just swap it in. Word of caution, the factory limited slip units are clutch style setups, and the clutches wear out overtime. The lvl 2 trucks got a gear driven unit, which is more robust, but harder to find.
With that being said, you don’t need a limited slip differential to Offroad. My truck is open front and rear and I wheel it as often as I can. If you’re looking to get into the hobby, I would find someone to go with and take the truck out as it sits and get a feel for how it performs (you’ll be surprised what it will do stock). Then, you can upgrade from there as you see fit.
