Loud clunking in front driveshaft? Doesn't happen when cold.
While driving home from work yesterday and getting up to 60mph I encountered a knocking noise from underneath my truck. It sounded like metal on metal and got worse the longer I drove it.
I immediately pulled over and saw nothing with a quick look over. So I limped my truck home, when going slow i noticed it was hitting in the same spot. The noise went away if I stopped and put it in park for a minute or 2 but came back shortly after driving.
This morning when pulling my truck into the back to work on it, there was no knocking. So far I've taken off the front driveshaft and noticed the U-joint was covered in grime (so I'm replacing). The propeller joint's metal end has a few nicks and scratches, the rubber boot connected has a few small tears and I'm sure it needs regreased (thinking about ordering a rebuild kit if necessary).
My questions: Does this sound like a front driveshaft problem? What are some diagnosing tricks to try?
I'm thankful for any help on this.
First post, yay! Lol
