4.10 ls and disk brake conversion
I snagged what I believe to be a 28 spline 8.8 4.10 limited slip from an 03 Fx4 I pulled the drivetrain from. Not too long I grabbed a disk brake assembly from a 98 mustang with the intentions of converting my 02 to disks and limited slip. I've read that the disk conversion is simple, and i can change axles no issue. But for a mostly daily driven truck with the occasional mud patch while checking cattle and snow this deer season, is it worth it? I've gone 4 years without issue. Should I even bother, or sell the whole shebang? Heck, I've thought of putting it in place of the open 8 inch under my torino if I decide against using it in my ranger. Just need an honest opinion.

I did an axle swap on mine (from 4.10 open to the 4.10 Level 2 Torsen) with discs (Explorer setup) so while it is different, I figure I should weigh in.
My limited slip setup is different than a clutch pack and I don't know how the clutch pack diff acts, but with mine, even on the street you know it is there. Takeoffs feel more controlled where my rear wheels used to break free with an open (I have a 5 speed, not an auto) and driving around it just feels different, you know it is there.
As for discs, I got an Explorer setup with EBC pads/rotors so it isn't the same as a Mustang setup, but the braking force is so much more powerful and by stopping distance has shortened. I preferred the Mustang setup for the way the parking brake worked but settled for the Expo setup, yet both have a great aftermarket preformance backing so you'll have great choices either way.
What I originally planned on doing was spending roughly the same amount I did on my swap instead on a locker and Mustang brakes but after finding a Level 2 axle I did some research and modified plans. Was it worth it? So far, I think it was, my biggest complaint is that now I have too much invested to sell the truck for a new one but I can live with that. I have not yet taken it seriously offroading but plan to visit the sand dunes once I do some work on my front suspension so only time will tell if I am truly satisfied.

Heck, I may just do it then. What am I out? A set of u bolts, calipers, and pads. I got the brakes free and the axle was going to be junked but pulled it for posterity.

No way I'd do the rear disc conversion again. I noticed NO difference at all in stopping distance or power. The 33" tires and the sheer weight of my truck may have something to do with it. Not sure really.
All it amounted to was a good way to spend too much money, but I am done with my problematic drums anyway.. I was having trouble with certain drum parts for a long time.

I have an 03 Ranger FX4 Level II. It has the 4.10 gears and LSD. I am looking to add disks brakes. Was it a simple swamp to put the disk brake hardware on it?
The disk brake swaps on here utilizing the mustang disks say it won't work for the FX4 Level II trucks. Does that not apply for explorer disks?
