My 1995 Ford Ranger 4.0 with the 5 speed has had syncro issues for years now but now its got a new problem. In all gears with the clutch all the way in it howls, and sometimes gets so loud it sounds more like grinding. it started earlier this week and wasn't something that got worse over time, it just started and was bad. Doesn't do it in neutral with clutch in, or in any gear with clutch out. Only in gear with clutch in, while stopped or moving.

Pilot bearing or throw out bearing. Drop tranny and replace everything including the slave. Use quality parts. Check out rockauto.com

Throw out bearing maybe

Thanks guys, pretty sure its the throw out bearing. Transmission has 430,000km on it now and shifts really difficult (shift forks or syncros) but I have a spare from my old truck with only 250,000 on it. I'm thinking of trying to make one out of 2, trying to keep costs down on it (in university so not much to spend) so I think that is the best bet. other transmission has bad input bearing but brand new clutch, throw out bearing, pressure plate.
