Default My transfer case was over full...

I'm trying to diagnose a noise from my transfer case. I was thinking it might be low, so I pulled the "Fill" plug and had a deluge of ATF. Better then a half quart came out. Can the trans rear seal be bad and leaking in to the T/C? This is a 06 XLT 4X4 with the 4.0 and automatic trans.
Thanks.

OK, I'm certain of where the extra fluid came from. I checked the trans fluid level. It had at least 2 extra quarts in it. I have everything back to where it should be. I still have the noise I was looking for, but not as pronounced. I am thinking the switch motor is going bad and hanging up in between 4X4 and rear drive some. So much for using Jippy lube for service.
Any thoughts on how much damage this may have caused over about 2500 miles? This truck has 191,00 miles on it. I replaced the engine at 161,000. It has no leaks, so I don't check levels as often as I should have. My bad...

You should drain the transfer case and put transfer case fluid in.I did mine and used Valvoline transfer case fluid.

Thanks Barnwycat11, but until I track down the reason I will just keep the ATF that was in it. I think I know what happened, but if I have to pull the T/V to replace the rear transmission seal I don't want new fluid in it.

Just curious, what -is- transfer case fluid, and doesn't the transfer case spec just require D3/Mercon?

It looks to be a full synthetic fluid. At $10 to $15 a quart I may not be using it.

Curious. I fail to even see the point since the spec we're looking to meet is actually for D3/Mercon ATF. Seems like a good synthetic ATF would be more appropriate than whatever that is.

As I have not priced out synthetic ATF I don't know if it makes since or not. But as I'm not an off roader I think the added cost would not bear out.

I took my Ranger to my transmission guy last Friday, (I had to pick up another transmission I had rebuilt) He took it out for a drive and it turns out the noise is not the transmission. He also said the over fill most likely did not damage anything. I am doing a drain and refill so it has clean fluid and will never use Jippy lube again.
