My sister bought a 1990 Ranger with I have no idea what front axle. The original owner had installed a new engine and transmission before selling it to the guy who sold it to my sister... He put about 1k miles on it. Runs great! Needs work, though.

Anyway... The second owner managed to completely destroy the automatic-locking 4wd hubs. I'm somewhat fond of them but do prefer manual hubs. My sister asked me to install manual hubs so we tracked down Rangers and Bronco IIs in the 1988 to 1990 range, as I figured that would be close enough to what we needed.

Lucky me, we found a 1990 Ranger with one manual hub and a 1990 Bronco with a manual hub. The guy at the parts counter of the local Ford dealer said that all of the axle parts were interchangeable. I ran into an issue. The splines on the cam of the manual hub and the splines on the axle shaft are the same pitch- My problem is that the manual hubs are made for a smaller shaft! I need to get this truck running in the next week or so and I'm no fan of spending dealer prices for things... And they don't carry the hubs even if I were. What should I do? Were the auto hubs just... bigger than the manual hubs? The hub bodies look to be about the same size, but that's about it.

Sounds like you're trying to put hubs from a dana 35 axle onto a dana 28 axle. The dana 28 axle has a smaller stub axle than the dana 35.
