Default Ford 7.5 -what's that electrical connector?

I just picked up a 1989 Ranger 2.9L dead stock all around, my first Ranger, and noticed an electrical connector mounted on the upper driver side of the rear differential case. From my reading, if stock, it has the limited slip 7.5" rear with 3.73 gears, but it's missing the tag. Since everything else looks basicaly untouched on this truck, I'm assuming that the rear is also original. Can you tell me what this electrical connector is for?

Gracias!

I would guess it is the RABS sensor (rear ABS) but I am unsure if trucks that old came with ABS.

Should be a speed sensor not RABS.. some trucks pulled from the rear diff not the trans. Its too old for electronics in the ABS, it would have been done with a proportion valve more likely if at all in those years.

I would say its a pickup for the rabs system my old 1994 had the 7.5 rear end with rabs and it had the same sensor and connector. The speedo was driven by cables as well

"From 2001-on, Rangers have Electronic Brake Force Distribution which is proportioning done by the ABS. Using the ABS sensors, the front to rear slip ratio is calculated in software. The line pressures are then adjusted to balance front to rear braking, driving the slip ratio toward 1.

Pre-2000 had 2 systems. RABS was standard on most Rangers, 4WABS was optional on some models, standard on others."

So it very well could be an ABS sensor. RABS was started in use on F-series trucks in 1987 apparently. https://books.google.com/books?id=sj...ABS%3F&f=false

Many thanks for the info! I had no idea that small trucks had anti-lock systems this early on. I appreciate all the replies.
