Default rear end whine?

looking at a 98 splash 4 cyl 4 speed with 170k on it. ONLY when on the throttle do you hear a whine, I suspect it would be the rear end, let of the throttle and coast it's gone. is this a known or common issue on these trucks and if so, how bad of a fix am I lookin at assuming it's the rear end? didn't purchase truck yet, just lookin at the issues it'll need fixed as this is one of them.

any cance on a video with the noise?
if not, take it for a good 5+ miles on the highway & them immediately stop and feel the rear diff case & trans case. better yet, have an IR thermometer and get a reading. and then look up what are acceptable temps. WAG, i'm guessing if either gets up to 150F its fine, but do a bit of research for sure!

being as its a 4cyl, i bet the rear end & trans weren't exactly abused or anything. mine had a bit of a howl (99 2.5l 4 cyl, 4.10 gears), but fresh 75-140 full synth got rid of it. same for my m5od manny tranny. new fluid and its very quiet again...

if the rear end is about to go (prolly not, i think they are pretty tough based on my reading), then you're looking at maybe $500 for a used replacement axle out of a j/y or on CL... at leat that used to be a regular price. tranny, will be more expensive, but i haven't priced them, sooo...

sadly I can't do any of that at this point. went and looked at truck last night and it's about 1.5 hours away. didn't check for temperature after the test drive but when crawling underneigh I didn't see any signs of the trans or rear axle having a fluid leak? original fluid with 170K kinda concerns me though, maybe just needs a fluid change but then again, maybe more is going on.

generations back, they would say if you can spit on a gear case and the spit didn't sizzle and burn off, then it's fine lol! others said if you can touch it with the palm of your hand for a good second before getting burned then it's all good lol

----------

i think the gears will last the remaining life of the engine, if you change out all the fluids and take care of it. that's my feeling...but i haven't driven it either lol

Rear end whine when it under load is typically the pinion bearing.

i wanted to say that lol, but i haven't heard enough different rangers or explorers to say for sure... old medium duty trucks have a rear end whine louder than the motor

pinion bearing was what I was coming up with on a quick google search. is that a big deal to swap out or easier and cheaper to just get a used axle and swap that in? or if I had a shop to the pinion bearing, how bad of a price is that?

When mine went bad I was short on time so I didn't do it myself, had a shop do it, total cost was around $800 but I also had them replace every bearing and seal in the axle so that drove the cost up. I'm also in Canada where things are more expensive.

My v6 is doing the exact same thing dude. But I haven't been able to pinpoint exactly where the sound is coming from. People have suggested I change my u-joints. Since they're $9 a piece I figured it wouldn't hurt to replace them whether that's the issue or not.

Not sure if that would help you any but I can let you know if it helped me once I get it done.

considering our circumstances that's not terrible, and that's just replacing/fixing the worn parts in your existing axle, not replacing the whole axle?

Bear in mind that if you take it to a shop to have them replace the pinion bearing, that if it's been making noise for awhile it might be that they discover the need for a new ring/pinion. At this point, your lowest cost option would be to do the labor yourself + a JY rear end, a bit more would be a JY rear but an 8.8 carrier and replace seals (brakes, etc), and it goes up from there. Pulling the carrier requires that the axle be set up; in my neck of the woods that's in the $300 range at a shop. Might want to factor in how long you plan on owning the vehicle.

Pinion bearing is not that hard to change. Even I can do it.

A rear end that is noisy when pulling and quiet when coasting, is typical of a worn rear end. I would expect a worn pinion gear, but worn bearings is also a possibility. It takes some skill to set up a rear end so the average DIYer is not likely to have much success.

Its the ring gear in the rear end. I had the same prob. I got a used rear end for 2 hundred dollars. Its easier than rebuilding the rear end. Cheaper too
