As I can imagine, a wheel bearing going out would make noise all the time, not just for a few feet after a startup.
And, wouldn't wheel bearing really put up a noise fuss the faster you drove?
As I said, no noise ever develops when I am moving along at a good clip.

Isn't there a two part process involved when you turn the dial to 4 wheel high?
1) Transfer case interaction which starts the front drive shaft moving.
2) Some mechanism that causes the front drive shaft to engage with the front wheels.
Am I right?
I am thinking something is causing the front wheels to try to hook up with the front drive shaft, even when I have not switched on 4 wheel drive.
