Manual transmission - flush first?
My 2011 Ranger is now at approx. 76,000 km's (48,000 miles). Until recently it has shifted smoothly, but now I have occasional problems shifting to 1 st from neutral (particularly when it's cold.). Ford suggests a change a 105,000 miles, but I was looking to this forum for advice about a transmission flush first before I try anything else. The clutch seems to be fine, so I was wondering if the fluid breaks down & should be changed more often? Thanks in advance!

Yes! Flush and fill your tranny and rear diff. I just did this at around 95k miles and it made the shift from 1st to N a lot smoother, especially in the cold! A flush will never do harm, my buddy does his flush every 15k and the only complaints he ever has is spending the money to have it done at the Ford Dealership I think it's a good start, should cost about $100 if you do it at your regular lube shop!
This year I got to do the clutch, timing chain, and exhaust. Got a 5000 mile road trip coming up! Take care

Re: Manual transmission - flush first?
Plus one changing the fluid is a great idea, just use the correct fluid which I believe is mercon v.
You may want to consider rebuilding the shifter as well the rebuild kit is easy and inexpensive to do.

Re: Manual transmission - flush first?
Yep as stated here. No harm in changing fluids early within reason I usually shoot for the 50-60k mile mark that seems like a reasonable mileage. The book mileages are there because that's how long you could stretch it but those are more so for the cost of ownership ratings. Less scheduled maintenance the better the vehicle looks on paper. The M5ODs in these trucks spec ATF. I would use whichever number Ford is on now think it's Mercon V they are backwards compatible to any previously specced fluid.
Also shifter bushings are a great idea. The rebuild kits are cheap and fairly easy to install and do wonders for shift feel. Also the fluid changes is super easy on these trucks both plugs are easily accessible just buy one of those cheap fluid pumps at your local parts store and you can take care of it with a Jack and drain pan no problems. Also make sure you inspect the shift rail plugs they are known to dry rot and leak. Can be costly if not caught in time.

Dump and fill yourself, no reason to flush

@pearlkid9988 shifter rebuild.... I never even thought of that until just now. I bet it would make my shift feel even better!

This is all you need. They sell them as a kit. Anywhere from $12-$30 depending on brand.

Re: Manual transmission - flush first?
I have a 2010 2.3 stick reg cab with 227 thousand miles and I have done like 5 manual tranny drain and fills and cleaned magnet plug. IT ALSO HAS THE ORIGINAL CLUTCH SYSTEM. I AM QUITE IMPRESSED WITH STOCK CLUTCH COMPONENTS.
WHEN SHIFTING TO 1ST FROM NEUTRAL ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS PRETEND YOU WILL SHIFT TO 2ND, BUT DONT, SIMPLY SNAP IT QUICKLY TOWARDS SECOND AND THEN GO TO 1ST. IT WILL GO INTO 1ST A LOT BETTER. SAME WITH REVERSE, TOWARDS 2ND AND THEN REVERSE. IT WILL BECOME A HABIT. THIS IS TO LINE UP THE GEARS.

Re: Manual transmission - flush first?
My 2011 just started this shifting issue. 90K on this beast. Must be time for a flush. Strange it seems to happen randomly and not cold weather. Definitely gonna start with the flush.

Change the fluid, rebuild the shifter.

Re: Manual transmission - flush first?
Do we have a guide here for the drain/refill?
Found the Dorman shifter rebuild kit for about $16 on Amazon.
