Default P0734 trans code. O/d light flashes, hard shift btwn 1&2. Turn truck off, o/d light q

2003 ranger 4 cyl w/ 4R44E trans. Started slipping a little when getting on the int St and O/D off light started flashing and a hard shift btwn 1st and 2nd but shifts fine through the rest including od. Pulled over and re-started truck and od light turned off and everything shifted fine for about a week until it did the same thing again. Happens about every 3rd or 4th time I drive. Had the transmission serviced with fluid and filter change out. No metal in pan and fluid looked fine. Took to MR transmission today to see about getting overdrive and intermediate bands adjusted (per a couple threads in hear this was a remedy for a few others who had same issue) they pulled code P0734 off of it and claim adjusting bands will not help and they say only remedy is to pull or possibly rebuild the trans. I just spent 1100 bucks yesterday due to an intake manifold blowing up and getting several other issues fixed so I want to be sure there is nothing else I can try first... Will adjusting the bands really not help or are they just trying to take more of my money??? Please help

I don't think they're trying to rip you off, unless they lied about the code. You can always get a second opinion as well. Read this for more info...

I'm pretty sure you have a 5R44E(5 speed) not a 4R44E (4 speed).

4th gear on a 4R44E is band related (also 2nd gear)

But bands are only applicable to 2nd, 3rd, and 5th on a 5R44E.

BTW yeah I'm still in Hoover.

Gotcha, I'll make sure which one i have before i get into it any more. I had a question for shelton, do you think changing out the valve body/ gasket and adjusting the bands is worth a try before i let them pull the trans? I think they said it would be 475$ flat fee just to drop it and find out whats causing the code with it and any repairs would start at that price and go up from there...From what i have researched i can adjust the bands and maybe get away with putting a new body from Central Valve in it and still be under the 475$ min that they are going to charge me. But just wanted to know based on my symptoms and code P0734 w/ rough reverse and O/D light flashes about once or twice a week in my Daily driver whether it may help or if it would it be pointless. had trans fluid/ filter changed a couple days ago and no junk in the pan... Just trying to avoid rebuilding as long as possible. If I could get another year out of it I'd be in a much better position to do more then...

Also, since you live in Hoover, do you know of any good Trans shops or good Mechanics in the area that I could trust to look at it for me? After talking to Mr Trans, they seems to get upset if i even hint and anything other than a tear down and rebuild and all they have done is pull the code. I would like someone to actually pull the pan, check out the Valve body and give me some options before pulling the trans and leaving me without a vehicle for a week just to find out. I plan on doing it myself if i can't find a reasonable mechanic soon...I don't mind spending money don't get me wrong, just want someone i can trust that doesn't want to push me into something thats not absolutely necessary...Thanks

Well I tried changing out the valve body with a new one I ordered from central valve bodies (great guys btw). But after I installed it the problem got worse, slipping in every gear, incorrect gear ratio codes on all 5 gears ect. Ended up having to get it dropped out and they found the pump had failed and caused significant planetary damage...2300$ and a rebuilt tranny later and it's running great... The shop was nice enough to use my old valve body since there was nothing wrong with it so I have returned the new one I bought so at least I'll get a couple hundred dollars back for that... But it wasn't the valve body or a band adjustment for my problem. On a positive note the truck is running like a dream now!
