Default Bad Syncros?

Hey all, I've been having problems with my transmission. I have a 2003 Ford Ranger XLT 3.0L 5-speed. It's getting hard to put in gear often. Was at the bank atm the other day and when I put it back in first gear, it went fully into gear but the gears grinded and I had to throw it in neutral and reshift into first. While driving, it's hard at times to get the shifter to engage in gear(all gears). Fluid level is fine. Was wondering if it could be syncros or maybe a weak/bad clutch or pressure plate. All feedback appreciated. Thanks in advance!

If it's all gears and they all started at the same time my bet is clutch. The stock clutches are self adjusting meaning they take up the slack from a worn disk on their own. Usual symptoms are hard shifts that progress into total lockout of all gears. I would start looking into clutch prices.

How does the pedal feel? Does pumping the clutch pedal a couple times before shifting help?

This as well could be worn slave. Or master cylinder. You can pull the inspection cover and check for leaks inside the belhousing. But if you go through the trouble to pull trans for a slave might as well do the clutch.

Pumping barely helps. The pedal has a slight "nudge". But I can tell where it releases. Will check the slave for leaks tomorrow then. Found some clutch kits on rockauto for under $100 for non self-adjusting and $136 and up for self-adjusting. I agree, if I do the slave, might as well do the clutch as well.

Yeah check for leaks and make sure your reservoir is full and if the hydraulics look good id lean towards a clutch. How many miles on it?

Yeah if it's a stocker depending on usage it's getting up there. Especially if you had weak hydraulics they can accelerate wear.
