Best to buy a complete vehicle and swap your body onto it, cause the chassis are completely different 2wd to 4wd. 2wd is upper & lower control arms with coil springs and the 4wd is torsion bar suspension. If the holes are there in the 2wd frame, it would be COSTLY to swap in all over (drillin or torchin out rivets for crossmembers just to mention some issues)

I did it last July when I did my 5.0L swap. LOVE IT!

I have two complete trucks, the 03 4x4 has a roted frame but most of the components are usable, i think lol. Think im going to scrap the 4x4 upgrade for now, but the moter and auto to manual trans is still happening. Would i be able to use the computer and driveshaft off the 03 to put on the 98?

You would need the computer (as that's what tells the engine what to do) and the driveshaft as it is a different length. You'd also need to swap the ignition cylinder and door locks to keep the keys that are programmed to the 03.

Even if you don't 4x4 swap, unless you get a 4x2 transmission, you'll need to keep the 4x4 transmission and transfer case in the 4x2 truck. (Depending where you are though, I would trade my 4x2 transmission for your 4x4 one)

My stock auto PCM was tuned to ignore the auto trans inputs by Fred at rogue. Ran the auto PCM up until I sold it and as far as I know it's still running that way. Shafts are different from 2wd to 4wd to account for the transfer case length. If you retain the complete 4x4 setup then you will be able reuse the donor trucks driveshaft. But the electronic 4x4 may cause issues. Without the dash switch and other components it may sit there like a lame duck. Or you may get lucky and it will just stay in 2wd.

What other components are you referring to on the 4x4? I was going to put the dash switch in or figure out a way to put manual lockers on it.

A lot of times Ford does not completely wire the whole circuit. Like mine had the pigtail for the fog lights but the fuse location in the box had no terminals. Same goes for the 4x4. It may have the pigtail but no other wiring to the motor on the tcase. I think that year also had a module to control it which you would also need. (not 100% on that though.) You may need to hack the old harness to get all of that and or add your own fuses/relays. Or switch to a manual tcase like the level 2s had. Just the old school handle on the floor. Not sure if the electronic can be converted or not. I think I read a thread somewhere that it can't but that info is here on the forum.

Another concern i had aside from trans and 4x4 wiring, does the harness have the same wiring between the 98 and 03?

I'm not really sure. They did the facelift in 01 which was primarily cosmetic. So I would have to see a wiring diagram to be sure. Are you dead set on keeping 4x4? Only reason I ask is I paid $500 for a low mile 2wd trans with warranty when I did mine from LKQ. And I'm sure you'd have no trouble unloading the 4x4 trans. They are more valuable in most areas so you might actually make some money and save yourself some hassle.
