Default 97' Ford ranger 4.0L manual rebuild.

I just bought a 97' Ford Ranger 4.0l manual with 157k for $800 and it's super clean. I bought it knowing that I would have to rebuild the transmission. Anyone have any suggestions or ideas for doing something? I was looking around and I read that it was a M5OD-R1. I have been looking at rebuild kits and they aren't that much money. Does anyone have any comments or suggestions? I want to know a few more things until this thing is parked for a couple weeks.
