Re: 8.8 with 4.10 gears pinion nut
Generally those nuts are locktited on, don't ever loosen, and it takes a good impact to getem off, not to mention they are torqued to a certain spec. Could be your crush-sleeve wore out, which would mean you'll have to remove & replace it via removin the R&P.
When we did mine a few weeks ago (2000 Explorer 8.8) the pinion nut was 1 1/16" or 1 1/8", don't remember which......I can check the 98 Explorer 8.8 I have out later today.

Re: 8.8 with 4.10 gears pinion nut
the crush sleave needs replaced, thats what keeps the preload on the bearings and such, not the shims. the shims are to set gear mesh

Re: 8.8 with 4.10 gears pinion nut
do these things go bad easy? could it have gone bad at the dunes? and this sounds like it's a inside thing so it will still need to be redone again?

Did you do this yourself or have a shop do it?
If you did it: Did you set the preload properly or did you just tighten it till you thought it was tight?
If a shop did it: I take it back as their work should be under a warranty for like 90 days or so.
IMO, don't matter where your drivin the think, same stress either way, on or off road as far as the pinion crush sleeve.
