Default Need Help on Transmission 2005 automatic O/D off light flashing

Hey, I just bought a 2005 Ranger XLT standard cab long bed with 46K miles on it from a private owner, when I test drove it I questioned him on a mildly hard shift from second to third, he told me that it's been that way since he bought it and that he originally took it back to the dealer to question them about it, they told him that's how they shift. On my way to work later the same day and after driving the truck about 25 miles, the O/D off light started flashing and the hard shift started between 1 & 2 (much harder). all shifts after that are smooth, it goes into O/D and when I hit the O/D off button, it down shifts as it should. I checked the tranny fluid while running and at temp, it seemed to be what on an oil dip stick would be 1/2 to 3/4 qt. over full but good color and no burnt smell. My first question is, is it safe to drive for now? Second question, any suggestions on where to start? I'm a little tapped out on cash at the moment but my first thought is replace the filter and fluid. From what I can see on the internet, this seems to be a common problem.

I've posted about this and all I got was crickets. I've read on the net that it could be the torque converter, the vss, the tps, fluid and filter change. It's funny how we all hear about how badass the ranger is but it has the wimpiest autotrans available. I would not be driving a suckamatic but it fell into my lap cheaply. Wonder why.

Take it to a transmission shop and they can read it to see if there are any codes. Then you can go from there.

Even if the light is not on. There will still be a stored code unless the PCM is reset.

You have to take it to a transmission shop. Regular code readers wont work.

Posted this same question on FlatRateTech Forum.Good Answer, although the guy was a bit "Down" on me for NOT having the "BIG trucks!Reminds me of a "clown" I met at a Gun Store.Got A rare 22 pistol,he joked about ",How :what I could shoot with that"? Him being a "TUFF guy,I walked away, and used it as it was intended(Trapper Edition)Here I am wondering how I'm gonna survive or fix a very potrentially economically devastaing Trans problem! I'll stick here with the "Real Men" that don't have yto prove, how BIG our Trucks are!

I just dealt with this in my truck. I had to replace the fuse in the fuse panel on the side of the dash. Check fuse in slot #26 it should be a 7.5 fuse. It has to do with the OD and a couple other things are all connected to that particular fuse. Mine was blown I replaced it and problem solved.
