ABS light comes on
Hi People
My ABS comes on after I've been driving for a while. If i shut the engine off and restart again its off...but will come on after awhile. Its hasn't done it for 2-3 days until yesterday. Half way home it came on. Brakes feel fine. I was snowing and raining last week. (true north)
Any ideas or help???
Thanks Again.

Check the pads in the front and shoes in the rear and make sure they have some life in them. After that I would just check the brake lines for leaks. If that all checks out and the brake pedal isn't super spongy then I wouldn't worry about it

Re: ABS light comes on
One of your ABS wheel sensors are throwing a code. You need to read the ABS code to find the problem.

Well considering NONE of that has anything to do with the ABS system, I wouldn't do any of that.
Check to see which sensor is causing the code. There are 3 in this truck, one in the rear diff, and 2 in each front wheel bearing / hub assembly. If it's one of the fronts acting up, you'll probably have to replace the entire hub assembly.
If it's the rear, check to see if there is any moisture in the connector between the sensor and the wiring harness, that happened to me once, I blew it out, and put some dielectric grease in the connector, no problems since. Happened after I submerged the axle in muddy water.

Re: ABS light comes on
I've got the same problem.
Truck was fine, drove to a local snowboard hill, parked it for the day and came back and there was no ABS.
When i let the truck sit for a while and get back in it to drive there's no ABS light but shortly after driving it will come back on. But after about a week the ABS light seems to be on all the time now.
Is there any type of fuse/relay that could have possibly blown? Or would it only be the sensors on the diff/front hubs?

How would you go about doing that? I would think you need something different than an OBD II reader?

Technically ABS is not part of the OBD II system. So it depends on how each manufacturer handles it. Some will let an OBD reader see the faults, some will let you clear them. On some of the 'pro' tools you have to get out of OBD reading and go into ABS. My understanding is that the newer a vehicle is the m ore likely it is that you can see it through OBD II.
Short answer: You are better off on an '02 with a 'pro' code reader from your mechanic.

There are two types of codes, OBDII and codes that are proprietary to the automaker. To access the proprietary codes takes an upper end scan that is not normally found at O'Ricers, Autozone or the like, but typically, a good shop and dealers. These can be expensive, thus, most DIY people don't own then. So what to do?
There are a few options a) have a shop to pull codes b) maybe zero in on a brake shop for a code pull, and the really great choice is, c) download FORScan for windows for free or pay ~$5 for the Android version and install on your phone/tablet. Now use an ELM adapter (shop carefully on that one) to tap into the vehicle network and FORScan, and you can access the code. Besides, every man likes to grow their tool collection so this is more than justified.

I had wondered about FORscan on this. I don't own it yet as I haven't had a need on my Ranger, and Torque works on multiple brands.

IMO, Torque works great as an OBDII code pull tool, not to mention the diagnostic functions above and just pulling codes.....scan tool (real time data such as, tranny fluid temp, fuel trims, O2 sensor voltages, etc), freeze frame data, etc. There are times when doing diagnostics where having access to this information really matters and will make the difference. It's also great for mileage related tracking (I can't think of a better way to accurately determine mileage on, say a 138 mile trip), emission systems readiness validation, etc. It really does a lot. FORScan takes it up to the next level (prop codes, programming PATS keys, and it looks like module programming although at this time I'm betting that ability is limited. Anthony on the other hand, flashed the GEM to reflect a change in tire size, so times are a changing.).

Re: ABS light comes on
It might be worth it for me just for a PATS key. I am convinced that my second key is a 'clone' of the first and that is why I was unable to program a third key. The limitations to just Ford products is a draw back, but it is only less than $5 on the play store.

Re: ABS light comes on
The Android version is "Lite"; you may only be able to program using the windows version. Something to check. There are also a few hoops and hurdles to clear to program keys, it's about security. Those issues are however, not at all insurmountable.
