Re: must replace right front axle shaft stub
I've got Dana 35.
So our local pick-a-part (one-hour+ away) has 9 matching Rangers that should have the part I need. But...
I don't know if any of you have ever pulled a front axle shaft, but the only way to pull it out (that I know of) is to first get the spindle off the steering knuckle. I've only done this one time (on my own truck). Removing the spindle bolts was a tough but worthy challenge with MAPP gas, plenty of PB Blaster and soaking time. The almost impossible task was separating the spindle from the knuckle after the nuts were off. The two pieces are usually fuzed together with rust, and with the axle shaft running through the spindle and the spindle held in place on all of the bolt studs, only hours of banging with a sledge, chisel, etc. gets it off. It was such a miserable experience, I NEVER want to repeat it again!... especially in a JY!
The other option (on a junk vehicle) would be just go at it with a cutting wheel, sawzall, etc. and cut the part out. I would do that at the pick-a-part, but I wouldn't be able to get power (or a truck with generator) out to the donor vehicle to be able to use those power tools. And what a PITA that would be anyway for a vehicle that's likely sandwiched between two other vehicles, that's probably resting on its belly with the rotors half buried in mud and pieces of glass. BTW it's cold and raining today and through the weekend.
The good news is that I found one on eBay for $61 - DONE!
The bad news is I probably won't get it until next Saturday. In the meantime, I think I will use my time cutting and a welding a hatch in my floor board between the seats to access my new Shiftster from inside the cab!
There's always something to do!
