Bought a 94 ranger with the 3.0 engine...recently started running rough. Doesnt have an egr. Has new dist cap and rotor. New air filter. While sitting it idles high then slows to the point of almost dieing. The catalytic converters have been punched out...checked because it acts like its choking itself out and backfires when letting off the gas. Any ideas?? It is fuel injected and no nothing about it.

^^^^ Progression of events almost sounds like it's running rich, someone just kept on driving it despite the warnings, the converters roasted and plugged up due to it running rich and left unrepaired, someone poked out the plugged converters so it was driveable, and ignored or didn't fully fix the original problem.

check your coils they tend to go out on the 3.ol

Its the v6..doesnt have the coil pack just the coil..and from what ive read if this goes bad the engine wont start at all..is this correct or can it go out gradually? I obviously know nothing about electronics lol

Check/ clean your mass airflow sensor and or 02 sensors if thats bad they can tell the computer to dump more fuel than needed
