Default Axle play.

Today my brakes got stuck and were making a drag sound, it turns out the adjuster was broken and they were sticking, or at least I think they were anyway. A buddy of mine helped me, hes a big Chevy guy, but he said my axle shouldn't have no play in them. He pulled on them, and they did have just a tad bit of play, both sides do. If the truck is sitting still on the ground and u rock it real good you can hear the brake cover that goes over the drums hitting against what sounds like the rim, but its not, its not the brake cover thing, its the actually axles making that sound, but you gotta shake it real hard.

Do these axles have a little play in them? Surely both of them aren't bad...they've made that noise since I got the truck.

the axle shafts will always have some end play to them. if it gets to the point where theres too much play it can be a bad thing but every vehicle ive owned with a c-clip rear axle has has play in the axle shafts, including my wifes chevy blazer. i wouldnt worry about it unless you start getting more than 1/8" of play.

If the play is more than 1/8", would replacing the rear wheel bearings fix this?

no. wheel bearings have no influence on end play. wear in the c-clips and/ or side gears in the diff is what causes excessive end play.
