Default Transmission lurching/no power

'02 Ranger, 4.0L engine, Auto. When you go to pass another vehicle and give it gas, it'll pause for a few moments and lurch really bad forward and it often times feels like there is no power at all when you go to accelerate. Also, the O/D light flashes in the dashboard and even after pushing the button on the stick, it does nothing. Any info would be great, thanks guys.

Sounds like it's slipping. When was the last time you changed the transmission fluid and how often (if ever) do you do this?
