Default 2002 4.0 auto transmission problems

Ive got a 2002 4x4 4.0 SOHC auto with 165,000 miles. Ive recently had a problem where it will slip out of gear, usually in 2nd or 3rd,and the rpms will go through the roof and it will not catch another gear. i will coast to a stop and i go through all the gears and nothing will engage in the transmission. Took it to a transmission guy and he drove it and found nothing wrong( did not slip for him). after letting it sit over the weekend i tried again tonight and the same thing happened except it would re-engage when i dropped it into 2nd gear. Happened four times for about 15 minutes of driving. O/D sensor did not flash.

I am having that same problem myself. Wanted to know what was your outcome? Looks like we have the same type of Ranger 02 Xlt 4.0 4X4.

Hopefully so. If the fluid smells burnt it could be a clutch. Or even solenoid. I'm looking in to the valve body fix so I'm looking for insight as well on these Ford trannies.
