My 4.0l '97 Ranger transmission (5r55e)is exhausted--metal shavings flushed from the cooler.

I'd like to put my 2000 Explorer parts car transmission (5R55e) in it. Unfortunately the VSS in the Ranger is in the transmission extension, while the Explorer apparently gets its speed signal from the ABS sensor on the diff. , as there is no VSS on the transmission.

From what I've read, just connecting the VSS wires on the Ranger, to the ABS sensor on the Ranger will not work--though it's not clear to me exactly what happens if one tries this?

I do have a '98 3.0l Ranger parts car. My question is, since it used the ABS for a speed signal, can I use any of its electronic parts/brains--or any from the Explorer--to make this work?

You might want to double check what transmission you have. I would have thought that in '97 it should have been a 4r55e, with the 5r starting around 2000. However, your door sticker should have a transmission code that will tell what it came with. I can't help with the speed sensor question.

According to TRS 5r55E started in 1997, but 4r's were also still available? Mine is a code D, so 5r.
