Default smelly clutch, master cylinder maybe going bad?

So I've had my ranger for about 6 years, its a 96 xlt 5spd 2.3l...
I have had no problems with the clutch ever since I got it. 2 days ago, I sold it to my cousin for 300 hundred bucks because he's young and needs a truck...the day he takes it home, he said that the clutch went all the way to the floor and there was no pressure, then after a little bit, he couldn't press the clutch pedal, it felt like it was rock hard....today he returned it and I drove it around for a while and i had no problems with it. ??? he must suck at driving stick...

the clutch seems a little more loose now. but I really don't know what he is talking about since I can't repeat it...anyone know what is going on? I was thinking it was just the master cylinder, I hope its not the actual clutch...thanks guys

Is it possible the clutch rod popped out of place, then maybe slipped back in? Look up under the dash, and you will see a rod going from the clutch pedal and into the clutch master cy,l and also check the clip where the rod attaches to the pedal. If you put your foot under the clutch pedal and pull up, it could possibly pop the rod out.
My other advise is to let him drive, while you ride along. See if he's doing anything wrong. Maybe he just isn't used to driving a stick, and got his foot hung up on the clutch pedal.
Let us know what you find out!

Thanks dude...I looked underneath and it looked like everything was all good. so i don't think the clutch rod is popping out...

I talked to my cousin and i guess he was going up a hill with a small load, when he came to a stop and tried to get it back in gear, he pressed the clutch and it 'lost pressure' and went all the way to the floor. After 'kicking' it a few times, the pressure started to come back...when he got home he could smell the burning clutch...

Did you check the clutch master cyl fluid level? Or maybe there is some air in the line. Thats about all I can guess, unless the slave cyl really is going bad.

x2 on riding with him to make sure he's driving right, and make sure he isn't resting his foot on the pedal, as he could possibly be pressing the pedal just enough to drag the clutch and make it smell
