96 2x4/4x4 Conversion- Difficulty Level?
So I found a guy selling a complete drivetrain from a 96 4x4 4.0 auto, and was wondering how difficult it would be to swap out the front end on my 96 2wd for it. A little custom work isn't a problem for me, but I was just wondering if anyone had done a stock 2wd to 4x4 swap on a second Gen. Also, will probably be a off road only truck.

*third gen, you'd need the front crossmember off the 4x4 as well as the ecu.

I appreciate the response.
3rd Gen? Confusion. 93-97 are 2nd Gen, right? At least that's what this website has led me to believe lol. He's got the ECU, and I'm sure the front crossmember would be easy to find at a junkyard. There's always 4x4s hanging around LKQ and Midwestern up here. If there's nothing else I need, I'm game. Now I just need to get out all to fit in my bed in one trip

Be very careful with the PCM as it may not work. There are several different calibration codes and they will not interchange. And then your truck won't run

Unless you have some sort of attachment to your truck, it's not really worth it to swap. Just sell it and buy a 4x4

Re: 96 2x4/4x4 Conversion- Difficulty Level?
Don't bother trying to get a cross member from the junkyard. They're riveted on, so they don't just unbolt. And those rivets are a pain to remove.
I had a buddy attempt to do the same as you, and even had the cross member from a donor truck. Not sure why, but he ended up just doing a straight axle swap. It was probably easier that way.
