Question about 5-sp Auto
This maybe a silly question, I know that Over Drive is 5th gear, but what gear is Drive?

never heard such thing as 5th gear overdrive unless u drive a chevy but drive is just under more power like starting out in 2nd instead guess ltd's n crown vic's had a fith gear overdrive at one time but ranger 5speeds just adjust power diffrently like switching from granny gear or like the uniqueness of my 87 electrically switches like a tandem rearend why i dig my older ranger 4x4 stopped production after 90 officially 92.

OD is 5th on a stick shift ranger. Your '03 automatic is 4 gears with 4 being overdrive. If you select OD OFF to disable the overdrive gear, your transmission will only uses gears 1, 2, & 3. When the OD isn't disabled, it will use gears 1, 2, 3, & 4. When you have the gearshift in 1 or 2, it will only use that selected gear.

Re: Question about 5-sp Auto
No, 2001 and on all Rangers got a 5 speed auto trans. So my question is: when you turn OD off will the highest gear the transmission will go into be 3rd gear or 4th gear?

Re: Question about 5-sp Auto
Not sure about that, I could be wrong. But either way my description of the process remains the same. 5 is OD. With OD disabled it will use 1,2,3,4 as needed. Without OD disabled it will use 1,2,3,4,5. Drive is not a gear. Its a setting for the automatic transmission.

Re: Question about 5-sp Auto
from what i can tell on my 5speed auto it shifts from 3rd at 35mpr then 4th at 45mpr then 5th at 65mpr thats in O/D when in drive its 2nd,3rd,n so on cuz even 4x4 no mater it starts in 2nd even in O/D but i have electronic tandem rearend so it makes it easier to notice gears so maybe to answer its always 2nd gear think ive read thats the way all rangers are geared on drive with 5speed auto.

Re: Question about 5-sp Auto
Like stated above, drive is just a selection for the transmission telling it what gears to use. The over drive button allows the transmission to either lock the torque converter while cruising or engage the highest gear the transmission has depending on the transmission's design. In either case, it is for better fuel economy. If you are towing or hauling a load, you generally don't want to have the O/D engaged since the transmission will keep "hunting" depending on conditions.

Re: Question about 5-sp Auto
Okay, the 5 speed Auto came out in '97 as an option for the 4.0. according to the guy at Ford, all 4.0's got them, but I know for fact thats blatant bullshit. Anyways, in '98 it was standard on all 4.0's, and os of '01 it was an option for the 2.3 and 3.0. As for electronic rear end guy, try the crack around Chicago. Keeps the mind intact longer.

Re: Question about 5-sp Auto
Easy answers to your questions:
What gear is drive? forward
What is the highest gear with O/D off? 4th

some of the 4.0s had the 4r44e and some have the 5r55e but when the od button is pushed and you see the tow haul light on the dash the highest gear the tranny will go into 4th gear when you dont see the tow haul light on the dash it will go into 5th aka overdrive.
