Default Clutch-gearing-tires...help

burnt through a new clutch in about 4-5k miles. towing some lumber on a trailer and started smoking when backing it up a small driveway. 1992 4x4 has a 4.0 with 31-10.50's and I'm guessing the gearing is wrong-for the taller tires. I think stock was 215/75/15. I don't know much about gearing at all, but this one seems geared tall as it doesnt seem to have much down low and at highway speeds the rpm's are low. I know that isn't a bunch to gone on, but can someone recommend the right gearing so I don't burn through another clutch. Could it be anything else?

looked up the axle code (91) which is 3.27. OE tires were 215/75/15. Running 31/10.50/15's with a 3 in body lift.

That's a pretty high axle ratio for a 4X4. I'm surprised they would have put one in a 4X4. That could be your problem. You might want to look at getting a 4.10:1 just make sure your front differential matches up to prevent other drive train problems.

Did you put the clutch in? Or did you have a shop put it in? If you had a shop do it they will more than likely replace it under warranty with such low mileage on it, as long as you keep quiet about hauling loads. Also, was the trailer overloaded with more than the truck should carry?

My neighbor put the clutch in. He had re-surfaced the flywheel too. I am tempted to go down to a 30-9.50-15 or 235/75/15, but don't want the truck to look bad with the 3 inch lift. I may just bring it back to stock height as I don't really go off-road anyhow. I bought the truck that way. I am able to drive it, but it feels like it is slipping in 1st a little. I looked up on a chart and see that 410's would be better for it. I need to see how much that will cost me I bought this to have as a winter vehicle (Mustangs suck in the snow) and to pull a trailer on rare occasion. Engine was rebuilt, new paint,brakes,shocks,clutch.....too good of a deal to pass up. Just don't have a bunch of $ to spend right now. Thanks for the replies.

try looking for some good used gear sets on this and the other rbv forums. also try craig's list. you should be able to get a pretty good deal.
