Default Loose shifter

In 07 fx4 auto. The shifter is really loose. Good 1/2 inch of movement up and down in any gear. When in drive the needle sits at the end of the "D". Is there anyway to tighten it up? Here is a pic of the it sitting in drive. If I wiggle the shifter the needle moves as well.

Movement in the shifter isn't the fault of the adjustment. The shifter cable is attached to the end of the shift rod via a plate with a ball on it. That plate is bolted to the rod with two bolts. They work loose. You can get to it by laying under the dash and tightening them. Then adjust the needle after its tight.
